Most who suffer from heartburn have experienced Acid Reflux at Night. You may go to sleep feeling just fine, but you are awakened late at night with an intense burning sensation. If one sleeps through these symptoms there can be nasty side effects in the morning. As you sleep, the stomach acid travels up through the LES, which can cause intense discomfort and even nausea. By the time morning arrives, you will feel like vomiting up stomach acid. The pink liquids, baking soda antacids, and pills may provide little to no relief. Acid Reflux at Night is not a pleasant experience.
Simple lifestyle changes can greatly reduce acid reflux at night. Changes to your diet, the amount of meals per day, and when you eat them can completely change how your body digests food. When you eat late at night before sleeping, the food ferments and breaks down within the stomach. More and more stomach acid is produced to break down the food. While you lay down sleeping it’s easier for stomach acid to flow through the lower esophageal sphincter into the esophagus. Try to eat 3-4 hours before sleep, or even more if possible. This will prevent acid reflux at night from occuring.
Avoid eating too much food. If you overeat, your body will compensate by creating more stomach acid. Additionally there will be extra pressure on the lower esophageal sphincter, which can cause it to open and allow stomach acid to leak. To prevent this, you can try eating 4-6 smaller meals during the day instead of the usual three large meals.
Try not to drink carbonated beverages. Soda and other carbonated drinks increase pressure within the stomach. This extra pressure can push open the LES, allowing acid into the esophagus. In many cases simply avoiding these drinks can prove to be a great acid reflux cure. It’s also prudent to avoid drinking these beverages before dinner, to prevent acid reflux at night.
Long term cures for acid reflux at night would be diet and weight loss. Being overweight puts pressure on the LES, which will then allow the flow of stomach acid into the esophagus. As you lose weight you may notice symptoms becoming less severe. This is not the case for everyone, some heartburn can be caused by a physical issue with the LES and may require surgery. It’s always best to talk with your physician about your acid reflux at night problems.
